While we would all prefer Austin have no Fusion Center at all, unfortunately, we do not yet have the power to prevent one from coming to town. We do however have a wonderful opportunity to preemptively influence the development of the policies and procedures that will govern ARIC. By pushing for the creation of a citizen’s privacy oversight committee, strengthening the privacy policy, and limiting the nature and amount of intelligence that can be gathered and the parties with access to said intelligence, we will drastically reduce ARIC’s ability to violate our privacy and to infringe upon our rights.
The significance of this particular battle cannot be understated! The fusion center monstrosity represents the epitome of Big Brother and the Police State. If we are to create a “pocket of liberty” here in Central Texas , we MUST ensure that this fusion center is the most transparent and accountable in the nation. We must send the message to our government that the people are out there, they are paying attention, and they will no longer stand for the militarization and federalization of our local police forces!
So join us, take action, and together, we WILL be free!
